Makayla likes a challenge. Whether learning the fast-paced Orchestra-class music “Fiddles on Fire” or finding her way at a summer music camp on a college campus, Makayla not only takes it on, but has been recognized for her “musical leadership.”
The 7th grader started playing violin three years ago when she joined her school orchestra and was provided an instrument by PING. “I see my daughter as the caterpillar that blossomed into a butterfly,” said Makayla’s mom, Melissa. “What I admire about Makayla is that when she does face a challenge… she faces it head on, but I really see it with her music. It makes me admire her strength.”
Besides participating in her school orchestra, Makayla takes part in PING programming, including our middle school Mentoring Program, which pairs volunteer high school musicians with PING students who play the same instruments. We have been offering this support to PING musicians for 20 years. Makayla said working with her mentor on classroom music helps her learn how to play the pieces and prepares her for orchestra class.
“The mentors she has worked with give her role models,” Melissa said. “It really empowers her and encourages her to want to play better and be better. It has impacted our lives in a super positive way.”
Also, with PING support, Makayla attended Illinois Summer Youth Music (ISYM) Orchestra Camp at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, this summer. “It was a new experience for me,” Makayla said. “At first, I was scared to be alone, but I got distracted by meeting people, the activities, and the environment.” By the end of the week, Makayla said she improved her social skills and gained important lessons on her violin.
At the concluding performance at ISYM, Makayla was honored with an Achievement Award for “musical leadership” in the ensemble setting, demonstrating effort and persistence, and for being a model for those around her. Makayla said receiving the award and attending camp made her feel confident and glad that she achieved new things.
“Just to see her growth in that one week really amazed me,” Melissa said. “She played extremely well. I cried (with joy) at the concert!”
And, the opportunity to play violin and participate in instrumental music has impacted Makayla’s overall growth according to Melissa. “Makayla speaks up, and really expresses herself with the violin as well. I’ve noticed she’s really grown in every aspect.”
