Imagine a fourth grader holding a violin for the first time, or a high school student preparing for auditions that will shape their future. These moments are possible because every student deserves the chance to pursue music and PING is there to make that happen.
But putting instruments into students hands is only the start of the story. As they grow physically and musically, PING responds - the next size viola for the orchestra student who had a growth spurt, an intermediate trumpet for the high school musician who is capable of playing beyond a student-level instrument. Accessories—music stands, reeds, rosin, mutes, and more—are provided as needed. PING also covers maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.
And, we ensure every PING musician has what they need to grow. This includes our mentoring programs - PING Partners and NextNote - along with access to private lessons, summer music camps, school music trips, concerts, and ensembles.
All of this made a world of difference to Charlie, who joined PING as a high school freshman. Although he played bass guitar before moving to Oak Park, receiving a double bass from PING opened the door to school ensembles, which Charlie had never previously had the chance to join, along with the opportunity to work on a new instrument.
Now a senior, Charlie performs at the highest levels: Jazz Combo, Jazz Ensemble, the top orchestra, and is a section leader in the Marching Band’s drumline. Outside of school, he has pushed himself as a member of a jazz trio with an intense schedule that plays at a professional caliber. Charlie has also formed a trio of his own.
Helping along the way - a private lesson teacher who Charlie calls, “amazing,” and instrument upgrades and a new bow to match his level of playing - all provided by PING.
Amid college applications to highly competitive music conservatories, Charlie reflected on his choice to study Double Bass Jazz Performance, “I have a lot more to learn.” Yet, he has already accomplished so much. He is currently the top in the area according to ILMEA District results and ranks in the 95th percentile statewide—with a goal of ranking first in the state.
And, Charlie has gained more than musical skills—he has found community. “Most of my friends are within the music program,” he said. “I especially made a lot of friends in Marching Band.”
To fully support students’ musical journeys, PING covers fees such as those for Marching Band and a Jazz Tour, ensuring access for all.
