Maxine Gimbal, an Oak Park and River Forest High School class of 2024 graduate, has been part of PING!’s Mentoring Program as a mentor for the past three years, when she learned that she would be Julliard-bound to study double bass performance.
She was also chosen to participate in the National Youth Orchestra of the United States, which included performing at Carnegie Hall in New York and in South America with Conductor Marin Alsop during the summer of 2024.
But, this young talent has valued her time spent in PING!’s Mentoring Program, which pairs OPRF musicians with PING! middle school students for lessons and camaraderie.
“Spending time mentoring PING! students is so important to me because helping younger kids get involved in music is extremely rewarding,” Maxine said. “It means so much to me that I was able to be a part of providing students with access to musical instruction, something that I believe has far-reaching and profound impacts on younger individuals.
From the ability to creatively express oneself to the development of strong leadership and problem-solving skills, I know PING! is making a huge difference in these young musicians’ lives.”
PING’s Mentoring Program is celebrating 20 years during the 2024-25 school year. Maxine held leadership roles during her last year years with the program.
